About TOPCon Technology
TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) is an advanced PV cell technology. Its core lies in the formation of an ultra-thin silicon oxide layer (approximately 1‒2 nm thick) combined with a doped polycrystalline silicon layer on the silicon wafer surface, enabling selective carrier transport and surface passivation. This structure allows majority charge carriers to pass through the oxide layer via the quantum tunneling effect while restraining minority charge carriers, thereby significantly reducing surface recombination rates and improving open-circuit voltage and PV conversion efficiency.
JinkoSolar panels utilize N-type solar cells with TOPCon, an advanced solar technology that boosts efficiency and output —even under low light conditions.

TOPCon solar cells feature an ultra thin silicon oxide tunnel layer in between N-type silicon layers: monocrystalline wafer and polycrystalline film. This setup reduces recombination and enhances carrier selectivity, enabling high open-circuit voltages (~740mV) and efficiencies, which exceed 26%.

Why TOPCon Delivers High Efficiency and Power Output?
Higher Bifacial Factor
Jinko N-type modules with Tunnel Oxide Passivating Contacts (TOPcon) modules can reach bifaciality factors of 85 +/-5%,, which means they generate more power from the back side of the panel—ideal for bifacial systems.
Superior Low-Light Performance
Thanks to better passivation and spectral response, JinkoSolar PV panels perform better than others under low-light conditions such as early mornings, cloudy skies, or partial shade.
Longer Lifespan & Lower Degradation
The use of cutting-edge materials ensures minimal Light-Induced Degradation (LID) and LeTID, helping maintain a stable energy output for decades.

wafer surface, enabling selective carrier transport and surface passivation. This
structure allows majority charge carriers to pass through the oxide layer via the quantum tunneling effect while restraining minority charge carriers, thereby significantly reducing surface recombination rates and improving open-circuit voltage and PV conversion efficiency. -
How does TOPCon support strategic sustainability goals?
TOPCon technology plays a crucial role in advancing large-scale decarbonization by delivering higher energy efficiency. This minimizes land usage and reduces Balance of System (BOS) costs—two key factors in building sustainable solar infrastructure. Additionally, it integrates smoothly with existing production systems, keeping retrofit costs low and avoiding unnecessary waste or resource consumption.
-
Is TOPCon technology compatible with current PERC production lines?
Yes. TOPCon leverages much of the existing PERC cell infrastructure and processing know-how. Most existing PERC production lines can be upgraded with minimal modifications, resulting in lower capital expenditure (capex) for line conversion, shorter learning curve for production teams and quicker ramp-up to mass production.
-
How technically mature is TOPCon?
TOPCon is not a prototype or emerging concept. It is a proven, industrially validated technology. Manufacturers benefit from its mature process flow, robust performance data, and established reliability in real-world applications.
-
What are the performance benefits of TOPCon modules?
TOPCon modules deliver high throughput and high efficiency, thanks to optimized high-temperature diffusion, increased bifacial gain, and stable energy output. These characteristics make it ideal for long-term, high-performance solar deployment.
